How much capacity do you need?
For documents and normal coursework, 500 GB may be sufficient. A 1 TB drive offers more breathing room for virtual machines, video files and multiple project backups. Larger capacities make sense when the drive will hold media libraries or several VM images, but they should not replace a second backup location.
External SSDs and virtual machines
Running a virtual machine from an external SSD can be practical when the host computer has limited internal storage. Connect the drive directly to a suitable USB port, avoid low-quality hubs and remember that performance depends on both the drive and the host interface.
Encryption and loss
Portable storage is easy to misplace. Sensitive coursework, personal documents or lab data should be encrypted using an appropriate operating-system or cross-platform tool. Keep recovery information separately; encryption without recovery planning can turn a minor hardware issue into permanent data loss.
One drive is not a backup strategy
If the only copy exists on the external SSD, it is storage—not a backup. Important files should exist in at least two locations, with one copy separated from the device you normally carry.
